President's Memo: Feb. 2012

Posted on February 8, 2012 by Mike Means

Hello everyone from sunny Florida! I am excited about attending IBS and participating fully as your President and State Representative. There is a lot on the agenda this week as thousands of builders and associates enjoy the show, hundreds of vendors display their wares, and last but not least, the business of the Association is handled.

It has been a busy start, from executive committee to Build-PAC meetings! I admit I stayed up late to watch the Thunder beat Portland (and yes, I am an hour ahead of Oklahoma) when I realized that the First Monday had become the First Tuesday.

One of the big issues facing our Association is determining what our Association will look like in the near future. There will be discussions and probably votes that will try to streamline the decision-making process. We need to be nimble so we can respond quickly to decisions being made in Washington, DC, that affect our industry. If we can't respond quickly then decisions will be made for us (or to us) that may not be in our industry's best interests. I look forward to reporting more of what happens this week in the near future.

In the meantime, our own state legislature is back in session. We have a lot of bills that we are keeping a close eye on and Mike sent out the first report last week. If you did not receive a copy, then send an email to Mike (mikem@oshba.org) and request you be added to the list. (We do use a different email system for legislative activities - one that allows you to communicate directly with your elected officials when necessary.)

Thank you for all you do for the industry. If I can be of any assistance, please let me know.

Your 2012 President,

Brandon Perkins

Spring Board of Directors Meeting/Capitol Visit

Next month on March 27th we will hold our Spring Board of Directors meeting in Oklahoma City. Be looking for your board packets about a week before the meeting. An agenda will be posted soon to let you know when and where the meeting will be.

We also use that day to go to the State Capitol and visit with our legislators on housing issues. You do not have to be a board member to participate! In fact, the more the merrier. We need to let our legislators know that our industry is alive and well....in every area of the state. If you can spare a few hours that day then plan on meeting at the Capitol that morning. More details will be coming soon, but reserve that morning and join us as we share the good news of our industry.
